Nineteen Eighty-Four Novel Summary 1

The first chapter starts off with the main character Winston Smith entering the Victory Mansions (where he lives). The victory mansions are not mansions and there is nothing victorious about them at all but a form of double speak to appeal the proles. Upon entering Winston sees a big poster on the wall of a man with "Ruggedly handsome features", with eyes that seem to stare at you know matter where you were in the room with the captions "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" underneath. The power is cut in the Victory Mansions to save energy for "Hate Week". Inside winstons apartment was a Telescreen, a TV that could never be shut off and had a camera on the other side that watched everything that went on. As winston looks out his window we see that there are many portraits of Big Brother every where giving the reader the idea that this is a totalitarian society. Also the thought police are also mentioned which are police that watch you're every move via the telescreens placed in everyone's homes. another thing we learn is that winston works for the ministry of truth, one of the four ministry's that run oceania. The ministry's are:

"The Ministry of Truth, which concerned itself with news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts. The Ministry of Peace, which concerned itself with war. The Ministry of Love, which maintained law and order. And the Ministry of Plenty, which was responsible for economic affairs."
